My dad’s organizing the garbage. Yes, really.
We’ve gotta seperate and organize our garbage before throwing it away. Not just into general waste, yard waste and recyclables but even those need to be neatly packaged, often wrapped in thick polythene bags. In the recyclables section, the paper waste goes into separate bags, and then the glass and plastic. Its very good for the environment.
I remember this story of Rohinton Mistry where the ‘hero’ finds it difficult to shit in the toilets of Canada. He prefers to do it Indian style, which requires him to climb up onto the toilet. Which means that his legs will disappear below the short doors of the loo, and then people will wonder. So he never pees or shits when he is outside.
It is tough for first generation immigrants to adjust to a new country, especially when its out West. In the developing world, whether it be Egypt or Dubai or Nairobi or wherever, there is less order and more freedom. In the developed world, there is more order and ostentatiously more freedom too. It is a confusing world, and it is very good for whomever, I’m sure.
So what is freedom anyway?
